Today is the first day of the English Playground, a summer English camp for low level learners. I initially thought I’d only gather teaching material for this program but when I arrived this morning the Korean co-teacher asked if I were ready to begin class. My mind immediately went “what”! So quick fast and in a hurry I had to shift gears right away. Three out of four students that were registered showed up, not so bad. I idea of the class is more so one on one tutoring for a two hour period - 9am to 11:00am. Quite a good deal if I’m asked. We’re reviewing all of the lessons from the first semester of school - 1 thru 7- so the kids are somewhat familiar with the material. I ended up with two sixth grade students Joon Hyuk and Jiwon.
The boy is a problem child in class, always talking, not paying attention and then saying, “teacher, teacher, I don’t understand,” “slow down please.” Me, I chime back, “be quiet please and listen carefully.” He is such a trip, but an overall cool kid. I found out later in the day that his Mom made a deal with him to attend the camp and let’s just say that come the end of the day Friday, he’ll walk away with his pockets on swole.
Although I’ve been teaching this group of sixth graders since February, I can’t say that I recall every seeing the girl in class. She’s quiet and unassuming but absorbed the lesson and corrections like pro and finished the lesson on review with flying colors.
